I noticed that some of you made effective use of the guiding questions in re-framing your definitions. With the exceptions of William's definition all posts that follow the guiding questions deserve full marks. Excellent. Williams, while your definitions have captured the main idea, they lack depth. You need to read those posted by Eugene, Dubois, Gidharry, Justin, Regis, Louisy etc. These definitions are comprehensive and well articulated. All the best.

Developmental literacy is defined as the progression of the individual cognitively toward the goal of becoming an independent reader and writer. For e.g In a child's early stages of cognitive development, the child gains an appreciation and enjoyment of print which evolves at a later stage of cognitive development to combining speaking and listening with what is already known about print. It is then that the child is ready to learn to read and write.
Content area literacy is defined as the ability to use reading and writing for the acquisition of new content in a given discipline. Such ability includes: general literacy skills, content-specific literacy skills (for e.g map reading in Social Studies) and prior content knowledge. (McKenna and Robinson, 1990)
