The Content Area Literacy Teacher needs to be mindful of these stages as they serve as a guide in selecting and organizing texts for students to read. In addition, an awareness of the stages is needed as some students do not always make the transition from one stage to another. Also, some students may be in a more advanced stage for their age group. Therefore, if the content area literacy teacher has a good understanding of the stages, then he or she can classify students in a stage and provide suitable reading texts to meet their needs based on their reading performances.

An in depth understanding of the stages of reading development is essential for the content area literacy teacher because he or she needs to know what stages or stages the students are at. With this knowledge, the teacher has a better idea of the type of texts that he or she can use for the students as well as the various teaching strategies which are most appropriate to use to teach students at various reading levels.

Chall’s stage model has important implications for both teachers and students. Because development at each stage is dependent upon adequate development at the prior stages, it is necessary that educators become aware of students' levels of development. In order to do that, teachers must provide multiple types of assessments. Assessments provide the information that will enable children with instruction that starts where they are and then build on that base to help children advance to the higher levels. For example, the child who lacks knowledge of rhyming and letter sounds (Stage 0) will need some instruction in those skills before moving on to the more formal phonics instruction that is associated with Stage 1.

I believe that understanding Chall's stages is critical to the Content Area Literacy Teacher as these stages explain the characteristics of readers within the different stages. This gives the Content Area Literacy Teacher insight to what stage of reading development his or her students are in. With this knowledge, the teacher becomes aware of the reading demands of her students and can utilise strategies and activities that would be effective for the success of the students' reading development and general performance.

Upon reading Chall’s Stages of Reading Development, as a novice English teacher I have come to realize that the gasping of language proficiency is no ordinary task, though many of us take it for granted as it was easily achieved by many. However the school where I teach, my students are at a stage where their literacy demands go unnoticed and as highlighted in Chall’s document Stage 0 to 2 are extremely important as it involves breaking the code and that of interpreting images and identifying sounds and sound patterns and word recognition into sentence formation. These stages highly represent the learning to read phase of an individual. I have also noticed that these stages are vital and set the foundation for further literacy development. It must also be noted that though an individual is expected to be at arrive at stage 2 by age 8, however this is not always the case. My duty as a teacher of students who require this foundation is to engage them in reading and writing activities to strengthen their capacity in reading in order to direct their learning to read to reading to learn.

Chall's stages of reading development presents a cognitive and social account of students' proficiency. As a novice teacher, these stages are very insightful as they show the literacy attributes of students at each stage and the transition from one stage to the next. It is amazing how much can be learnt from these stages. They aid in:
1. Planning classroom activities for students 2. grouping students 3. choosing resources for students 4. identifying prerequisite knowledge needed for students 5. choosing appropriate teaching techniques 6. identifying the types of issues and literature students are interested in based on their stage The characteristics highlighted by Chall shows the "life skills" needed at every stage.
The reading and writing demands of the stages are clearly articulated by Chall, providing content area teachers with insightful information on the necessary steps or procedures for student literacy.
The above points show how crucial knowledge on the different stages of reading development is for all content area teachers.

Chall's stages of Reading Development not gives us teachers a tool to diagnose our students literacy abilities but it also gives us an idea of the literacy skill which our student should possess at certain ages. As a result Chall's stages of Reading Development guides us teachers as to the strategies, texts and scaffolding which learners of different ages ought to be exposed to.
