Students,
We have seen that graphic organizers are useful tools you should utilize during content area literacy instruction whether you are developing expository text structure awareness, vocabulary knowledge, reading or writing competencies. However, I have not focused on the value of graphic organizers in class but hope that as we explore a wide range, you will discover the value of this tool.
Having examined a few during the week, respond to the following questions: You may engage in some reading or research to compose your response.
1. What are graphic organizers? (2 marks)
2. List 3 benefits of using graphic organizers in the teaching and learning of content. (6 marks)
Let's share our ideas and learn from each other. All the best.

Graphic organizers also referred to as concept maps, story maps, concept diagrams or knowledge maps are visual or graphic displays which depict the relationship between terms, facts and ideas within learning a task. They allow the mind to discover patterns and relationship it otherwise may have missed.
Three benefits of using graphic organizers in the teaching and learning of content are:
1. If used as a review tool, they help students remember important facts and concepts they need to know.
2. It would help students better understand how their ideas can be broken down and organized for easier communication.
3. Constructing the graphic organizers will engage students, once students are involved in the construction of their own knowledge is tends to more authentic and longer lasting.

1) A graphic organizer is a simplistic visual tool that is used to demonstrate the main ideas, key concepts and relationships between concepts in the form of diagram.
2) Advantages of using graphic organizers to teach and learn content are as follows:
i) it makes revising easy since all the information is placed on one page rather than hidden in large paragraphs which can be very confusing and frustrating.
ii) it allows students to make connections because students will be able to link various concepts and information and allow them to make or identify relationships between these topics and concepts.
iii) They can be great assistance to visual learners who many of the time struggle with information that is presented in written form only. Visual learners will be able to see what is being said and as a result will remember what was taught when they construct a graphic organizer.

Graphic organizers are communication devices such as maps, charts and diagrams that show the organization or structure of concepts, terms, principles, and ideas as well as relationships between them.
First, students are considerably more likely to understand and remember the content subject you are teaching. Graphics help students separate what is important to know from what might be interesting, but not essential information.
Second, because the semantic information processing demands are reduced, you can often address the content at more complex levels; this is especially true for many students with learning disabilities. Showing (as opposed to just telling) how the information is structured can be a powerful way to facilitate understanding.
Third, students are more likely to become strategic learners. Reading and writing skills, communication skills, and analytical, critical, and creative thinking skills are all subject to improve when students learn to recognize these patterns of thinking, and constructing, by using graphic organizers.
